A mud tub (or drilling tub) is a portable, heavy-duty tank used in mud rotary and core drilling. It acts as a primary reservoir for mixing, holding, and recirculating drilling fluids (water mixed with bentonite or polymers) while continuously catching soil or rock cuttings brought up from the borehole.

Purpose and Function

Fluid Circulation

It provides a constant supply of drilling mud to the drill string. The mud stabilizes the borehole, prevents collapse, and cools the drill bit.

Cuttings Management

As fluids return to the surface, the tub allows heavy cuttings and sediments to settle out before the fluid is pumped back down the hole.

Mixing

It provides operators with a dedicated area to mix new batches of bentonite and polymers easily, preventing waste and ensuring correct fluid consistency.

Common Types and Equipment

Bulk Mud Tubs: Large-capacity holding tanks (ranging from 1,000 to over 4,500 liters) used in larger water well, geothermal, and mining operations. For heavy-duty industrial storage, contact one of our friendly staff to explore options.
